Lobes variable, loosely attached and flat initially; fertile lobes imbricate and growing outwards, reflexed at apices to expose the apothecia, c. 5 mm wide. Upper surface brown, greyish brown or pale grey, wrinkled, matt or glossy, ±faveolate and often ±maculate (×10 lens), with varying amounts of pubescence, especially on the dorsal side of apothecia; margins indented, broadly lobulate or denticulate, phyllidiate. Phyllidia terete to ±flattened, to 1 mm wide, mostly marginal, occasionally spreading laminally. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface dark brown to black, tomentose or densely pubescent, rarely partly glabrous. Apothecia common, to 8 mm diam., rounded to reniform, with a thin dentate thalline margin; dorsal surface scabrid; disc reddish brown, matt or glossy. Ascospores 3-septate, 15.0–22.7 × 6.0–7.5 μm, pale reddish brown. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Hopane-7α, 22-diol (major), ±7β-acetoxyhopan-22-ol (minor or trace), ±O-methyl-leprolomin (minor or trace), ±iso-O-methylleprolomin (minor or trace), ±methyl gyrophorate (trace).

This cosmopolitan species is uncommon on bark and rock in south-eastern Qld and north-eastern N.S.W.; grows in eucalypt forest and rainforest. Earlier records from the A.C.T. and Vic. were misidentifications of N. rufum.
